There is an apparent crosshair trained at Kuwaiti World Aquatics (AQUA) President Husain Al Musallam. This, after it was revealed that the aquatics chief indirectly sought the assistance of the Kuwaiti government in his bid for the prestigious international federation’s top post back in 2021.

Asia Aquatics in Turmoil Amidst Allegations of Corruption

Previously, it was made known that Al Musallam is already entangled in an ethics case after the Kuwait Olympic Committee Board of Directors, where he serves as its general secretary, unanimously agreed to refer him to the Ethics Commission for claims of corruption, misuse of public funds, and conflict of interest.

Freelance writer Ahmad Alsalami followed up his revelations on social media platform X by claiming that Al Musallam and the Kuwaiti Swimming Federation President, Sheik Khaled Al-Badr Al-Sabah, violated the Olympic Charter by writing to the Kuwaiti government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking them to support Al Musallam’s candidacy in 2021 by “exploiting” their foreign relations and extending assistance relating to his campaign for presidency.

“AL-MUSALLAM IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR VIOLATING THE OLYMPIC CHARTER
🔸 🔹 🔸 🔹
THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE IS REQUIRED TO REFER THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING FEDERATION, HUSSEIN AL-MUSALLAM, AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE KUWAITI SWIMMING FEDERATION, SHEIKH KHALED AL-BADR AL-SABAH, TO THE ETHICS COMMITTEE FOR DELIBERATELY VIOLATING THE OLYMPIC CHARTER, AS HE ADDRESSED THE KUWAITI GOVERNMENT, REPRESENTED BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, AND ASKED THEM TO SUPPORT THE CANDIDATE HUSSEIN AL-MUSALLAM AND EXPLOIT KUWAIT’S FOREIGN RELATIONS TO SUPPORT HIM. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO INFORM YOU THAT THE KUWAITI OLYMPIC COMMITTEE REFERRED HIM TO THE ETHICS COMMITTEE DUE TO SUSPICION OF ABUSE AND VIOLATION OF THE OLYMPIC CHARTER, AND THIS CAME AFTER I PUBLISHED THE TOPIC IN MY ACCOUNT ON THE X PLATFORM. THEREFORE, THERE MUST BE AN URGENT INTERNATIONAL ACTION TO HOLD AL MUSALLAM ACCOUNTABLE FOR VIOLATING THE OLYMPIC CHARTER.”

With the World Aquatics Championships currently ongoing in Doha, Qatar, all nations are conveniently gathered together and should be able to discuss this pressing matter. The question is, will the World Aquatics member federations act on this swiftly? Moreover, focus should also be given to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as there is an apparent violation of the Olympic Charter by someone who holds the position of Director General in the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). Will they also act on the matter?

Finally, it was earlier revealed that a separate corruption issue will be tackled at the General Congress of the Asia Aquatics on February 12 at the sidelines of the World Aquatics Championships. With Al Musallam being a Kuwaiti national, will the leaders of the member federations of Asia Aquatics also discuss this issue and act on the matter?

Many questions still remain.
